        <title>Mean annual water-budget components for the Island of Maui, Hawaii, for current conditions, 2001-10 rainfall and 2001-10 land cover (version 2.0)</title>
        <edition>Version 2.0 - This data set was updated in October 2017. Water-budget components in version 1 were impacted by a clerical-type error that affected selected input files for the model that was used to compute the components. After identifying and fixing the error, the water-budget components were recomputed and placed in version 2.0 of this data set. First release: June 2016 (version 1). Revised: October 2017 (version 2.0).</edition>

The shapefile associated with this metadata file represents the spatial distribution of mean annual water-budget components, in inches, for the Island of Maui, Hawaii. The water-budget components in the shapefile were computed by a water-budget model for a scenario representative of current conditions (2001-10 rainfall and 2001-10 land cover), as described in USGS Scientific Investigations Report (USGS SIR) 2015-5164. The model was developed for estimating groundwater recharge and other water-budget components for each subarea of the model. The model-subarea dataset, consisting of 318,429 subareas (polygons), was generated using Esri ArcGIS software by intersecting (merging) multiple spatial datasets. Spatial datasets merged include those that characterize the spatial distribution of hydrologic and physical conditions (rainfall, fog interception, irrigation, reference evapotranspiration, direct runoff, soil type, and land cover) that the model uses to compute groundwater recharge and other water-budget components. Additional spatial datasets merged into the model-subarea dataset include those of select geographic features that assist in analyzing model results. This metadata file describes the process of merging these spatial datasets. The shapefile attribute information associated with each polygon present an estimate of mean annual rainfall, fog interception, irrigation, septic-system leachate, runoff, canopy evaporation, actual evapotranspiration, storm-drain capture, net precipitation, total evapotranspiration, recharge, and seepage from reservoirs and cesspools. This shapefile also includes select geographic and land-cover attributes of the polygons. Brief descriptions of the water-budget components and attributes are included in this metadata file. Refer to USGS SIR 2015-5164 and SIR 2014-5168 for further details of the methods and sources used to determine these components and attributes.
      <purpose>The water-budget components in this shapefile were determined as part of a study to estimate the spatial distribution of groundwater recharge on the Island of Maui, Hawaii, for a scenario representative of current conditions (2001-10 rainfall and 2001-10 land cover), as described in USGS SIR 2015-5164. The recharge estimates may be used in numerical groundwater models that can evaluate the effects of groundwater withdrawals on groundwater levels, streamflow, coastal discharge, and salinities in public and private wells on Maui.</purpose>

      <procstep>
        <procdesc>Used the ArcGIS Intersect tool to intersect (merge) the following 13 shapefiles. (One or more of the listed shapefiles may not be directly used for the water-budget scenario documented herein. However, these shapefiles were needed for other water-budget scenarios and were therefore included to create a consistent set of subareas for all scenarios.)
(1) a 2010 land-cover map (see fig. 6 in USGS SIR 2015-5164) developed by Johnson (2014) on the basis of the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type map (U.S. Geological Survey, 2010a);
(2) a shapefile converted from a raster grid that provides the spatial distribution of monthly rainfall totals during 1920–2012 (Frazier and others 2016), mean monthly and mean annual rainfall (Giambelluca and others, 2013), and mean evapotranspiration and related parameters (Giambelluca and others, 2014);
(3) a map of Thiessen polygons (see fig. 1-3 in USGS SIR 2015-5164, Appendix 1) for estimating the spatial distribution of daily rainfall in the water-budget model;
(4) a map of aspect (windward or leeward), drainage basins of stream-gaging stations selected for the runoff analysis (see table 1-4 in USGS SIR 2015-5164, Appendix 1), and catchment zones delineated by Rea and Skinner (2012) (see fig. 1-5 in USGS SIR 2015-5164, Appendix 1);
(5) a map of altitude contours, with 100-ft intervals [U.S. Geological Survey (1983)], used to define zones with fog interception (see fig. 4 and table 2 in USGS SIR 2014-5168);
(6) a map defining the spatial distribution of seepage rates from cesspools and septic systems developed on the basis of septic-discharge rates to on-site disposal systems estimated by Whittier and El-Kadi (2013) for tax-map key parcels;
(7) a map of soil units (Natural Resources Conservation Service, 2006);
(8) a map of aquifer systems (see fig. 1 in USGS SIR 2014-5168) as defined by State of Hawaii (2010);
(9) a map of areas where the top of the main basalt aquifer is above sea level (see fig. 1 in SIR 2014-5168);
(10) a map of 1870 land cover (see fig. 5 in USGS SIR 2015-5164);
(11) a map of the following areas where Shade (1999) estimated recharge: leeward East Maui [see zone C in fig. 1 of Shade (1999)], windward east Maui [see fig. 7 in Shade (1999)], and part of Maui east of longitude 156 degrees 30 minutes west;
(12) a map of drainage basins of 13 USGS stream-gaging stations (16501000, 16513000, 16519000, 16524000, 16542000, 16552600, 16574000, 16596200, 16602400, 16617000, 16638500, 16646200, 16650000) that were not included in the runoff analysis of SIR 2014-5168. Drainage basins of stream-gaging stations were delineated using Hawaii StreamStats web application (Rosa and Oki, 2010); and
(13) a map of sedimentary deposits, as defined in the geologic map of Sherrod and others (2007).</procdesc>

Recharge was set to constant rates for subareas with land cover of water body (0 in/yr) and reservoir (528 or 1,268 in/yr, depending on location). For subareas with taro land cover, recharge equals 455 in/yr plus direct recharge from cesspools. For all remaining subareas, recharge was calculated on a daily basis as the residual of the water budget using the recharge-model equations in SIR 2015-5164. Mean annual values for water inflows (PNet_Mn + Irr_Mn + Septic_Mn) to the plant-root zone (which includes the soil) may not equal water outflows (Runoff_Mn + AE_Mn + StDrain_Mn + Rech_Mn exclusive of Dir_RC_Mn) because of changes in soil-moisture storage and because of rounding and averaging of the model results.</attrdef>
