This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2003 along a north-south profile west of Wendover, Nevada. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Resources Program in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
<purpose>The purpose of this data release is to provide MT station locations and data to the public. In the Great Basin, the strike of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone is poorly constrained because it is largely concealed below a Neoproterozoic-Paleozoic miogeocline and basin fill. To better constrain the location and strike of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone below cover, a north-south MT sounding profile was acquired in north eastern Nevada to investigate buried structures or sutures that may have influenced subsequent regional fluid flow and localized mineralization.</purpose>
<supplinf>This data product contains magnetotelluric (MT) transfer functions (TFs), which define the frequency dependent linear relations between components of electromagnetic (EM) field variations measured at a single site. Two sorts of TF are provided for most sites. All of the TFs provide input data for subsequent MT inversion and interpretation. They are estimated from the raw EM time series by (a) Fourier transforming data in a series of short overlapping time windows, and (b) applying robust regression methods to the resulting sequence of Fourier coefficients. For remote reference estimates data from a second site are used for noise cancellation, and to reduce bias due to noise in the predicting magnetic channels. Apparent resistivities and phases, which can be computed from the off-diagonal components of the impedance tensors, are frequently used in 2D interpretations. The EMTF data product includes estimates of the TFs for a range of periods (which may vary, depending on instrumentation and deployment time), as well as estimation error covariances.

The time-series files may be imported into a proprietary commercial MT data processing software (MTR15) written by EMI (who later sold the software to Schlumberger) or the user can write their own software to read the binary data by following the instructions in the time-series .TXT files. The processed MT data EDI files may be imported into any MT modeling software that imports the industry standard EDI format. For example, commercial software WinGLink and GeoTools MT will import the .edi files for modeling.</supplinf>
