      <abstract>A seismic hazard model for South America, based on a smoothed (gridded) seismicity model, a subduction model, a crustal fault model, and a ground motion model, has been produced by the U.S. Geological Survey.  These models are combined to account for ground shaking from earthquakes on known faults as well as earthquakes on un-modeled faults.
This spreadsheet summarizes the ground motion models selected and weights applied for the ground-motion model for South America.</abstract>

        <procdesc>Active crustal earthquakes are modeled using five alternative ground motion models (GMMs) from the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA)-West2 project; earthquakes in the stable continental region or craton are modeled using eight GMMs; subduction interface earthquakes are modeled using three GMMs; and deep gridded seismicity is modeled using four GMMs.  Weights applied to the GMMs are the same as those developed for the USGS National Seismic Hazard Model for the conterminous United States.</procdesc>
