The datasets contained herein were collected as part of a cooperative U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) project entitled "Field Investigations to Help Support the Assessment of Background Concentrations for Uranium at the Homestake Mining Company, Superfund Site near Milan, New Mexico, July 2016." Groundwater samples were collected from pre-selected wells and analyzed for metals (including uranium), alkalinity, ammonia, common ions, nitrogen, gross alpha/beta, radium isotopes, Radon-22, uranium isotopes, stable isotopes, sulfur isotopes, nitrogen isotopes, helium-4, dissolved gases, tritium/helium-3, carbon-14 and chlorofluorocarbons. Groundwater samples were collected using micropurge, volumetric, and passive samplers. Seven different laboratories analyzed the samples; separate datasets containing the results from each laboratory are provided in this data release. Microsoft excel .xlsx, xml, and tab-delimited text files are included for most dataset. A subset of the files are in .csv format.
<purpose>This data release documents water-quality data collected in August-October 2016 to help characterize groundwater resources near Milan, New Mexico. Specifically, these data can be used to identify chemical signatures (also called geochemical fingerprinting) of groundwater in the alluvial and Chinle aquifers at and near the Homestake Mining Company Superfund Site near Milan.</purpose>
<supplinf>In addition to groundwater sampling, borehole geophysical data were collected on selected wells and are included in this data release.</supplinf>

<attraccr>A spreadsheet was used to facilitate sample tracking by comparing sample names, dates, and times with sample IDs and analyses. Laboratory data attributes were verified by looking at laboratory reports and lab results were checked using a QA/QC process that included duplicates and blanks. The laboratory results were compared to reporting and method detection limits. Relative percent difference calculations were done on duplicate samples. Matrix spikes were conducted by spiking random samples of media for various analytical methods at a frequency of 1 sample per batch of 20. Results of these were checked to ensure there were no matrix effects. Laboratory standards were used by each laboratory and results were checked for percent recovery.</attraccr>

<procdesc>Groundwater samples were collected in October 2016 by volumetric sampling, micropurge pumping, and passive samplers (which were deployed in August 2016). Each sample was collected in bottles or copper tubing and preserved according to USGS sampling protocol (U.S. Geological Survey, Field Manual). Samples were kept on ice if necessary for preservation and shipped to the appropriate laboratory for analysis. Nineteen wells were sampled volumetrically between October 4, 2016 and October 8, 2016. Six wells had passive samplers deployed in August 2016 at varying depths described in the Well_field_data_parms.txt file. The samplers had a 120 micron screen size. These samplers were collected during the same October timeframe as the volumetric samples. The same six wells with passive samplers were sampled with a micropurge pump setting at variable depths in October 2016.</procdesc>
