This product is a U.S. conterminous mapping of block group income derived from the 2010-2014 Census American Community Survey (ACS), adjusted by a 2013 county-level Cost-of-Living index obtained from the Council for Community and Economic Research. The resultant raster is provided at 200-m spatial resolution, in units of adjusted household income in thousands of dollars per year. The data are intended for GIS-based area calculations, for example calculating mean values for watersheds. The Census American Community Survey (ACS) is a rolling 5-year data collection effort, which obtains detailed information from a sampling of households. (1) U.S. Census National ACS 2010-2014 data, in shapefile format with associated tables, were downloaded on Jan 10, 2017 from https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger-data.html. Median household income value, item B19013e1, was extracted for the five year period for 2010-2014. This was converted to a national 200-meter (m) grid, named income_raw14. Values of 0, primarily national parks and areas of no habitation, were converted to NoData, so that resultant calculations would not be skewed downwards for those areas. (2) County level 2013 Cost of Living Index (COLI) was obtained from The Council for Community and Economic Research (www.coli.org) in June 2013. The data were generously provided free of charge. These were joined to a 2010 shapefile of county boundaries obtained from the National Historical Geographic Information System (nhgis.org), then converted to a 200-m grid, and termed county_coli13. (3) The 2014 raw income in (1) above was adjusted by the county Cost of Living Index as follows to create an adjusted grid: income_adj14 = income_raw14 / (county_coli13 / 100) For example, Fairfax County, VA has a COLI of 124.9. Thus a block group in Fairfax County with raw income of 101.25 ($101,250), would be divided by 1.249 to give an adjusted income of 81.06 ($81,060). This makes incomes across the country more comparable. (4) Units of resultant raster are household income in thousands of dollars per year.
