Unless otherwise noted, taxonomic determinations were completed by Sam Droege and other professional bee taxonomists where necessary (e.g. Dr. John Ascher, American Museum of Natural History; Dr. Jason Gibbs, Cornell University). If taxonomic determinations are completed by a Collector or someone other than Sam Droege, they are reviewed by Sam Droege or other professional bee taxonomists. These data are also subject to review by USGS SAS for accuracy and completeness following Darwin Core including but not limited to scientific name (syntax, spelling), and temporal and geographic information. No formal logical consistency tests were conducted. This dataset is an aggregation of numerous projects and collection efforts conducted across the United States, U.S. territories and Minor Outlying Islands, Canada, Mexico, and other global locations by employees and field personnel of the USGS, and other federal and state agencies; protected area managers, biologists, private researchers, citizen scientists and volunteers. Both USGS researchers and partners collect specimens in the field using different trapping techniques depending on the goals of the project, duration of the trapping and the habitat. The most common trapping methods are deploying pan traps and hand netting. The specimens are then kept frozen until they are able to be processed which entails cleaning and drying the specimens and then pinning. After the specimens have been pinned, the meta data is logged and the specimen receives it's unique identifier and a label. Once a specimen is labeled, it is identified to species using various taxonomic keys, literature and reference collections. The species data is then entered into the Bee Lab SQL database and double checked.
