On January 25, 2023, a set of five Sentek® TriSCAN® (moisture content, salinity, and temperature) probes were placed in a cross-shore array along a dune at Madeira Beach on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The probes extended down 0.90 meters (m) below the surface (referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 [NAVD88]) and contained 9 sensors each, at depths of 5 – 85 centimeters (10 cm spacing). The sensors collected hourly observations of the volumetric moisture content, volumetric ion content (proxy for salinity), and temperature. The positions of the probes in the dune were selected upon visual inspection of the study site to capture data on the dune face, dune crest, and the back dune region. For more information about the location of the probes, please see the Moisture_Probes_Locations data and metadata files included in this data release. Following erosion of the dune from Hurricane Idalia in late August 2023, the seaward-most two probes were washed away in the storm (Probes 1 and 2) and contain hourly data up to August 25, 2023. The remaining probes (Probes 3, 4, and 5) were manually removed on August 31, 2023, and contain data up to that date.

<complete>Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Data for Probes 1 and 2 are available up to August 25, 2023, which was the last collection time before the probes were washed away during Hurricane Idalia. Data for probes 3, 4, and 5 are available through August 31, 2023, when they were manually removed following post-Idalia surveying. There is a gap in the data for Probe 1 from March 17, 2023, at 8:00 AM to April 21, 2023, at 9:10 AM due to a dead battery.</complete>

<procdesc>ACQUISITION and PROCESSING – Five Sentek® TriSCAN® Bluetooth probes were placed along the dune on Madeira Beach on January 25, 2023. The probes were numbered sequentially from the dune face (Probe 1) to the back dune (Probe 5) and were set to automatically collect soil moisture, salinity, and temperature data at the top of every hour during deployment (January 25, 2023, to August 30, 2023). See the Completeness Report section regarding gaps in the dataset. Data were periodically acquired and uploaded to a Sentek® IrriMAX® (https://www.irrimaxlive.com/) server for retrieval on a local machine. Data for each probe were stored in individual comma-separated values (.csv) files that were concatenated into a single .csv file using Python 3.7. Additional columns were added to the concatenated .csv file to identify the probe number and the surface elevation of the probe location.</procdesc>
