This dataset represents "phreatophyte areas" mapped as part of an analysis of irrigation pumping
in Diamond Valley, Nevada published in 1968. The data were digitized for comparison with mapping
of groundwater discharge areas done in 2011 as part of a groundwater study in these valleys published
in 2016.
<purpose>This data set was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study. The intended uses of this data set
include, but are not limited to, natural resource modeling, mapping, and visualization applications.</purpose>

<horizpar>National map accuracy standards (NMAS) established for the United States in 1947 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1988) state that no more than 10 percent of features shall be more than 1/50th of an inch from their intended location on maps of scale smaller than 1:20,000. National standards for spatial data accuracy (NSSDA) published by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) in 1998 relate the NMAS to the digital geospatial data standard by multiplying the NMAS accuracy by a factor of 1.1406 (Federal Geographic Data Committee, 1998) resulting in expected error in the geospatial data at standard mapping scales as follows:
>1: 24,000-scale map - 14 meters
>1: 62,500-scale map - 36 meters
>1: 100,000-scale map - 58 meters
>1: 250,000-scale map - 145 meters
>1: 500,000-scale map - 290 meters
>1:1,000,000-scale map - 579 meters

All attempts were made to verify 100 percent of the digital spatial data with supporting source datasets. Two visual checks were done to verify that the digital data was a fair representation of conditions in the study area.

<horizpae>This boundary is the result of field interpretation of the location of the boundary between areas dominated by phreatophytic vegetation and areas dominated by xeric vegetation. No details of the field mapping procedures are documented in the source report. The source map was presented on a basemap of "U.S. Geological Survey Topographic quadrangle maps" of unreported scale. The scale bar presented on the plate indicates the plate was drawn at approximately 1:250,000-scale. The paper map was scanned and rectified to digital versions of the 1:24,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangles. RMS error during rectification was reported at 15.3 meters. Taking all known and unknown sources of error into account, the horizontal positional accuracy is deductively estimated at 200 meters.</horizpae>

<procdesc>Plate 2 from Nevada Water Resources Bulletin Report 35 was scanned at 1200 dpi. The scanned document was georeferenced to digital raster graphics (DRG) of the U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale quadrangles covering Elko and Eureka Counties using tools available in ArcMap 10.2. The 1:24,000-scale DRGs were used for georeferencing as they were assumed to be the source of the basemap adapted for the plate. A total of 8 links were used to georeference the document. The georeferenced image was rectified using 2nd order polynomial transformation. Rectification resulted in an RMS error of 15.3 m.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Phreatophyte boundaries from the rectified plate were digitized to a line feature class. Topology was verified to ensure the line data did not contain dangles, overlaps, or improper intersections. Points containing attributes representing vegetation assemblages shown on the source map also were digitized. ArcGIS tools were used to convert the lines to a polygon feature class and verify the polygons had no overlapping or missing features. The points were used to populate polygon attributes at the time of conversion.</procdesc>
