This spatial data set was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to represent the extent of soils with moderate
phosphorus retention potential in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States (Hydro Region 17; Major River Basin
7 (MRB7))
<purpose>This data set was intended to represent spatially explicit landscape characteristics in the application
of the SPARROW (SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed attributes) model to assess total nitrogen and total
phosphorus conditions in surface water in Major River Basin 7 (MRB7) using the National Hydrography Dataset as a
hydrologic framework.</purpose>

From ISRIC website: "Main controlling factors of P retention processes, at the broad scale under consideration, are considered to be pH, soil mineralogy, and clay content. First, derived values for these properties were used to rate the inferred capacity for P retention of the component soil units of each map unit (or grid cell) using four classes (i.e., Low, Moderate, High, and Very High)."</logic>
