The data are presented as ASCII text files that can be converted to continuous raster format. These data were collected as part of the groundwater availability study of the Upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary geohydrologic units in the Williston and Powder River structural basins. These data are intended for regional use and may not be as accurate at local or point scales. The files listed below are supplemental to the USGS SIR SIR 2014–5047 titled “Hydrogeologic Framework of the Uppermost Principal Aquifer Systems in the Williston and Powder River Structural Basins, United States and Canada” and should not be used without an understanding of what the files represent. All data were shown to be consistent with descriptions in the accompanying report. The data were also checked to ensure agreement with the original publication (Hotchkiss, W.R. and Levings, J.F., 1986, Hydrogeology and simulation of water flow in strata above the Bearpaw Shale and equivalents of eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85–4281, 72 p. (Also available at http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/wri854281.) All data were also checked to be in agreement with other hydrogeologic units or aquifers in the study area so that there are no overlaps among sequential units. Additionally, in areas where the unit outcrops, the land surface elevation (National Elevation Dataset; NED) was used as the surface. Data set is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details. A formal accuracy assessment of the horizontal positional information in the data set has not been conducted.
