The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from multibeam echo-sounder and sidescan-sonar data collected in the vicinity of Woods Hole, a passage through the Elizabeth Islands, off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In November 2007, bottom photographs, seismic-reflection profiles, and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconaissance survey.
<purpose>This data set includes the locations, identifiers, grain-size data and(or) textural descriptions of surficial sediments collected at 58 stations on topographic and backscatter data of the sea floor in the vicinity of Woods Hole, offshore Massachusetts. The sediments were collected with a modified Van Veen grab (small SEABOSS) during USGS survey 07034, conducted November 14-19, 2007. This data set was acquired to ground-truth (verify) topography and backscatter intensity of the sea floor in Woods Hole. These acoustic data were collected with multibeam sea floor mapping systems during NOAA survey H11077, conducted during 2001.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Processing included the following steps:
1.) Thirty-seven samples were collected with a Van Veen grab sampler (Blackwood and Parolski, 2001) equipped with a still and video camera. Visual descriptions were used for rocky/bouldery stations at 21 additional stations where samples could not be collected.
2.) Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Science Center. Coarse fraction determined by sieve; fine fraction determined by Coulter Counter. See Poppe, Williams, and Paskevich (2005) for analytical specifics.
3.) An ESRI shapefile was created in ArcView 3.3 from an ASCII comma-delimited file created by the laboratory's software.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. One of the distribution format names was modified in an attempt to be more consistent with other metadata files of the same data format. The distribution section had bad links to the XLS and CSV data downloads, as well as the catalog page. These links were fixed. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.</procdesc>

<eaover>Textural data and visual descriptions produced from the samples and photography of the RAFA07034 cruise. Visual descriptions of sediment texture were used in areas where samples could not be collected (e.g., boulder fields. These stations can be differentiated by the presence of the nodata value '-9999' in many of the numeric analytical fields.</eaover>
