    <descript>
A MODFLOW-NWT groundwater flow model was developed to simulate groundwater
movement in the area around Anvil Lake, and groundwater inputs and outputs from
the lake from 1980 to 2014. Surface-water hydrology was simulated using the lake
package. The MODFLOW model was first calibrated for steady-state conditions, or
"average" conditions corresponding to January 1, 1980, to December 31, 2014 to
estimate spatial hydrogeologic properties. Following the steady-state calibration,
the model was applied in transient mode to estimate average monthly hydrologic
conditions (groundwater inputs and outputs) for each year from 1980 to 2014.
      <purpose>The purpose of this model was to support an assessment of how changes in water level
and climate affect the hydrodynamics and trophic state of shallow lakes.</purpose>
      <supplinf>Support is provided for correcting errors in the data release and clarification of the modeling
conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. Users are encouraged to review the model
documentation report to understand the purpose, construction, and limitations of this
model. The models will run successfully only if the original directory structure is correctly
restored. The model archive is broken into several pieces to reduce the likelihood of download
timeouts. Instructions for reconstructing the original directory structure and running the models
included in this data release and described in the model documentation report can be found
in the readme.txt ASCII file which can be downloaded as part of this data release.</supplinf>

      <attraccr>The model was calibrated using the parameter estimation code PEST, and calibration targets included heads, streamflows, lake level, and groundwater inflow to the lake. Steady-state calibration focused on the period from 1980 through 2014 to establish hydrogeologic properties. A second steady state model run using climate data from 1980 to establish starting conditions for the transient model. The transient model, run from 1980-2014, was calibrated to average monthly measured water level in Anvil Lake. The transient model retained hydrogeologic properties from the steady state model.</attraccr>
