The major clay step features are defined as having a vertical face that is greater than 1.5 meters.
The clay step features were qualitately identified using an underwater video monitoring sysyem.
The extent and magnitude of the clay steps were mapped using a muliteam bathymetric
echosounder system.
The major clay steps can be used to define the benthic habitat characteristics near current
white sturgeon spawning grounds. The data may provide unrealized areas of species preferred
habitat.

The major clay step data was not reviewed for quality assurance or quality control.
No tests were used to check the consistency of the data. There are likely substantial areas of error within the data; however, the data provides a general description of the major clay steps within the study area.
The data is complete.

Video clips were recorded at discrete, equal-width increments along designated cross sections. The video clips were recorded using a high-resolution, color video camera outfitted with two high-power laser pointers. The laser pointers had a constant 10-cm separation as a scale of reference to determine sediment grain size. The camera was lowered through the water column until it was near the bed and the substrate could be identified. Each video was then reviewed to determine sediment size and embeddedness.
unknown
A separate study using multibeam echo sounding resulted in a nearly seamless digital elevation map of the channel bed. This bathymetry was layered behind the sediment facies map to identify sediment category boundaries, and to delineate the sediment facies, such as sand dunes and clay steps.
unknown
Esri ArcGIS™ was used to create a GIS layer defining the major clay step features at Myrtle Bend based on the analysis of the video recordings and the multibeam bathymetry data.
