USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Data Catalog Help

Quick Start Search Tips

Use the Data Search box, upper left. Searches the full text of the metadata records in the catalog. Higher weights are assigned to search terms occurring in the Title and Keywords of the metadata, and these records will be ranked higher for Relevance.

For multi-word queries (e.g., marine geophysics), records with the words adjacent to one another (e.g., occurrence of Keyword "Marine Geophysics") will be weighted higher than records containing the words not adjacent to one another (e.g., occurrence of Keywords "Geophysics and Tectonics" and "Marine and Environmental Geology").

Free-text searches can be combined with guided searches and geographic searches.

In the left-hand sidebar, you can filter by keywords from one or more controlled vocabularies; by data sources; and by authors.

Controlled vocabulary searches are limited to the Keywords section the metadata records in the catalog. Author searches are limited to the Originators in the metadata records.

For each filter you use, select one or more concepts from the filter, and then click the 'Apply' button in the filter. Note that each time you apply a specific filter, the available selections in the other filters change in response to your action.

Guided searches can be combined with free-text searches and geographic searches.

The map interface, associated controls, and drop-down menus allow the user to draw custom search footprints (rectangles or polygons) or select pre-defined footprints of named geographic areas (U.S. states, countries, or oceans and seas).

The default search compares the selected footprint with the Bounding Coordinates of the metadata records and returns all intersections; to search for metadata records with bounding coordinates entirely within the selected search footprint, unclick the "Intersects" box above the map.

Geographic searches can be combined with free-text searches and guided searches.

Previously selected search parameters can be removed entirely or singly by clicking the blue boxes below the free-text search box.

For each retrieved item, the View Metadata button displays the metadata; the Get Data button provides all associated data and data service links (for FGDC metadata records, these are derived from the Distribution Information section).
