About data.usgs.gov

Data.usgs.gov is a component of what has been termed the Integrated Information Environment (IIE) in the USGS. It provides a data hosting and caching space, mainly accessed through Web services, for data resources of importance to USGS science. It is not by any means the sole source for USGS data, and there is much that is not represented here. It does provide the interface point to the USGS Comprehensive Science Catalog, a resource that will over time come to reference most or all of the USGS data holding.

Data.usgs.gov provides several types of data services and data access methods used by a growing suite of applications that are part of myUSGS (another IIE application) and other systems. Use the menu items on this page to explore data resources available from this platform.

If you are interested in other USGS information and data, please visit the wide array of Web resources we have available on the main USGS Web site - http://www.usgs.gov/.

Permalinks

A new function of the data.usgs.gov platform is to house permalink references for a variety of data and information resources. Permalinks provide a permanent (relatively) path to a search-indexable Web page that provides a piece of content or lists all known information about a given data resource. Permalinks on data.usgs.gov are indexed using sitemaps that provide all permalink URLs for a given domain to public search engines. This allows them to be indexed and discovered through simple Web searches. The data.usgs.gov platform currently provides permalinks for the following resources (click to read about the resource):

Indexed KML

The data.usgs.gov platform also currently hosts KML output associated with the permalink resources, which is indexed via geositemaps for access through Google Maps, Google Earth, and other applications that tap into Google's KML indexes. The following links will open geositemaps on this platform listing individual KML resources. You can discover these resources by searching Google Earth or on the Web via Google Maps. On the Web, you can limit your search to the data.usgs.gov domain (using site:data.usgs.gov in the query parameters) to find resources from this platform.
